About Lilly

A Note from Lilly

My name is Lilly, and I grew up right here in Dallas. The Dallas I grew up in compared to where I’m raising my family now, though, can feel like a different planet.

As a kid, I rode around Preston Hollow on my bike, splashed in creeks and spent hours with my friends in the back room of our house getting immersed in arts and crafts. I didn’t go to sleep-away camp regularly growing up (save for a few times I’d like to erase from memory), but I did attend every summer craft camp at our Preston/Forest MJ Designs. When a mosaic studio opened in our neighborhood (Smashing Times!), I begged them for a job. Since I was only 12, the owner let me watch her infant son after school and make samples. I was hooked One summer my Mom even let me “mosaic” the drawers of our game room built-ins. The next year I entered a craft challenge to design a costume concept for Blink-182 on the radio and won!

In 2013, I welcomed a daughter into my life through domestic adoption. Excited to show my girl some of my favorite parts of my childhood, I started to realize quickly many “simple” things these days were much more complicated! Even the beautiful inspiration from blogs, magazines and Pinterest we can enjoy today has changed old-school crafting in some ways - leading with expectations of a finished product over the joy of just getting started, without much of a plan and only in pursuit of what can be found in our own imaginations.

When I think back on my favorite childhood and adolescent memories, they’re usually not as big as the experiences I often think I need to create these days to make memories with my family and friends. Really, the best times are mostly in that old enclosed garage of my childhood home, throwing random arts and crafts supplies on the table and creating something unexpected out of nothing alongside my sister or friends.

Sometimes I wonder, what happened to good old-fashioned fun?

The tricky thing about looking for that kind of fun was, I wasn’t making much myself. Simple, memorable fun requires me to welcome unproductive time with open arms, which is not on my typical Mom/wife/friend/business-owner to-do list! When I finally allowed myself the time to do “nothing,” surrendered my control and dropped my expectations, magic happened. The only thing better than my “unproductive” time creating was if my daughter, husband or some friends could join.

I love seeing the value of handmade craft now trending in fashion and decor, but nothing is as satisfying to me as letting something strike me as beautiful and trying my own hand at interpreting it. There’s excitement, problem-solving, and a thoughtless headspace as everything starts to flow.  Afterward, I have a souvenir of that making experience and each time I see or use my design in my daily life, it takes me right back to that special moment when I created it. This is always so much better when it’s something I made alongside great friends.

Speaking of friends, I’m not only excited to craft with you myself. I’ve invited some of Dallas’ top makers to the party! You’ll get to connect with some of the best craft artists in Dallas while enjoying quality time with your friends.

I’m excited to bring the joy of making and the connection it brings to those you open up and explore with at your next celebration! I promise you’ll learn something new about yourself, about your friends and you’ll have memories and mementos of your time spent creating together!
